The concept of community youth groups was born out of the CCYP department's vision to offer a greater number of young people more opportunities to partner with Habitat for Humanity in a sustained and productive way. Community youth groups allow young people to develop skills in leadership and teamwork, while providing continued valuable resources to the organization and the local community.
Definition of Community Youth Groups Community youth groups (CYGs) are unincorporated, youth-led and youth-run organizations of Habitat for Humanity, composed of diverse representation from the local community (youth leaders from schools, HFH chapters, churches, businesses, home-partner youth associations and other youth service organizations) that work in partnership with a local affiliate in building, educating, fund raising, leadership development and volunteer coordination.
A CYG essentially operates as the "youth wing" of the affiliate. A Habitat for Humanity affiliate staff person acts as an adviser to the group on its activities. This individual also serves as one of the liaisons between the CYG and the affiliate leadership. A CYG is expected to work in partnership with the affiliate, following any fund-raising guidelines developed by the national organization and Habitat for Humanity International. It is also expected to mobilize other youth to form campus chapters, home-partner youth associations, church youth groups and other youth organizations.
Functions of Community Youth Groups
- Build and renovate houses in partnership with the affiliate.
- Educate the youth population and local community about poverty housing and Habitat for Humanity's work, vision and mission.
- Raise funds for the work of Habitat for Humanity.
- Assist the local affiliate in community development initiatives.
- Spearhead youth leadership development in the local community.
Steps to Forming a Community Youth Group
- Establish contact with your local Habitat affiliate.
- Generate interest in Habitat for Humanity in your community.
- Develop a core group of youth and adults who are committed to Habitat's vision.
- Organize community events (educational events or fund-raisers) to boost interest in Habitat.
- Contact your area CCYP representative to discuss your intent.
- Complete and return the CYG application, available from your CCYP representative.
All groups that wish to carry Habitat for Humanity's name will undergo strict scrutiny before their application is submitted to the international board of directors for approval. This includes making sure that they meet the basic criteria of affirming and committing to Habitat for Humanity's mission, are equipped in a way to support the work of the affiliate and/or the national organization, and have instituted an infrastructure to maintain sustainability. By becoming officially chartered HFH youth programs, these new groups will enjoy the benefits of sustained staff support and a connectedness to our worldwide family. The national organization and/or HFHI will officially grant name permission.
