Textus Quick Guide

Hypertext

One way of discussing or commenting on an article, excerpt, or other materials posted as a web page is through the use of hypertext annotations and links. This format is ideal for discussion (questions, comments, further information or resources) based on and centered around a text. Each annotation or link is anchored on some part of the text. Other participants can then add their replies and questions to existing annotations.

1. Making an annotation or link on the text

Once you have a text open, you can make a hypertext annotation by using the following steps (see also Screen Shot 1 below):

  1. Select the part of the text (word, phrase or sentence) to which your comment should be anchored. Avoid selecting large sections of text, such as complete paragraphs or ranges of paragraphs.
  2. When you finish selecting the text and release the mouse button an “Annotation Properties” box will appear automatically.
  3. Enter an appropriate title in the Title field. Type in your annotation in the Description field.
  4. Select World visibility to make your entry visible to everyone viewing the document. Click here to read more about different visibility modes.
  5. If you want to add a link to a web resource to your annotation, enter a complete url, starting with "http://" in the Target Page field.
  6. Click on Save. If you are not already logged-in, a dialogue will appear, prompting you to enter your username and password. After successfully loggin in, you need to click on Save again.
  7. When the link is successfully saved the text you selected will appear highlighted. You can read your annotation by clicking on the highlighted text.

2. Responding to an annotation or link

You can also respond to a link or an annotation made by someone else.

  1. Open the annotation or link to which you would like to respond, by clicking on it. The annotation or link will open in a small window. In the upper right hand corner click on "Action".
  2. Choose “Add Annotation (Respond)” or “Add Link (Respond)”, depending on which you prefer to do.
  3. Follow the instructions above to create your annotation or link.
  4. To view the new annotation or link, after the text refreshes simply click on the highlighted text. The original annotation or link will open, and at the bottom you will see a list of responses to the annotation or link. Click on a response title to open it.
  5. You can respond to a response, simply by clicking on “Action” in the response, and following the same steps.

3. Adding an annotation or link to an already used anchor

You may wish to add a new annotation or link (not a response) to the same anchoring text which has been chosen by another person.

  1. Open the annotation or link anchored on the text you want to use by clicking on it. The annotation or link will open in a small window. In the upper right hand corner click on "Action".
  2. Choose "Add Annotation to this anchor (new branch)" or "Add Link to this anchor (new branch)", depending on which you prefer to do.
  3. Follow the instructions above to create your new annotation or link.

4. Deleting an annotation or link

  1. Open the annotation or link anchored on the text you want to use by clicking on it. The annotation or link will open in a small window. In the upper right hand corner click on “Action”.
  2. Click on “Delete this link”, and then choose “Ok” in the pop-up box (or “Cancel” if you change your mind).

5. Printing

If you prefer to read the text on paper, you can print it in two different ways.

  1. Within the text window, click your right mouse button. Choose “print” from the menu that will appear. This will print the text just as it appears in the window.
  2. Click on the print icon in the upper right hand corner of the text. If you print in this way annotations made by you and other users will appear as footnotes below your text.

6. Discussion Tree

When viewing a text on which many annotations have been made, you may wish to simply view all the annotations in one place - a discussion tree. You can do so by clicking on "View Discussion Tree" icon in the top frame. You cannot add annotations or links in this view.

The discussion tree opens up on top of the text, covering half of it. You can move it to the other side of the text if you need to read the covered text by clicking on "Toggle" at the top of the discussion tree window. If you click on "Locate" for an annotation or link listed in the discussion tree the text below will shift to the anchor for that annotation or link and highlight it in violet.

7. Filters

When a document has been posted for some time, it may have a large number of annotation and links, perhaps added by more than one group of users. In this case, you may wish to use filters in order to specify which annotations or links you will see. Click on “Filters” in the upper right hand corner, and in the pop-up window that appears, select the appropriate filter.

  • “This Group”: annotations and links made only by your own user group
  • “Today”: only annotations and links made today
  • “Author”(find the author’s name in the drop down list): only annotations and links made by a particular person
  • “Text”: only annotations and links containing the key words you enter in the box

When you click on “Activate”, the text will reload showing only the links you requested.
